Gum Disease Treatment
It may seem hard to believe, but the American Dental Association reports that chronic periodontitis affects nearly half of Americans over the age of 30. The good news is that this common condition is highly treatable and reversible if caught early.
At Urgent Dental Care, we provide gentle gum disease treatment, and we’re here to offer support and comfortable care to you and your family.
What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, occurs when your gum tissues get infected; if left untreated, it can eventually lead to tooth loss. In its early stages, gum disease isn’t painful, so you may not even know you have it.
But eventually, you may begin to notice that your gums are red or swollen or that they bleed when you brush or floss your teeth.
Some of the factors that can increase your chances of getting gum disease include the following:
- Poor oral hygiene
- Tobacco use
- Diabetes
- Genetics
- Certain medications
Gingivitis — The Early, Reversible Stage
Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease, and it’s caused by plaque buildup at the gumline. With professional cleanings and diligent brushing and flossing, this form of gum disease is reversible.
Periodontitis — When It Becomes More Serious
Without proper treatment, the infection can spread below the gumline. This stage of gum disease, known as periodontitis, can deteriorate your jawbone and connective tissue, and eventually lead to tooth loss.
